The Role:
As part of James Fisher's commitment to safe, sustainable, and compliant operations, we're looking for an HSSEQ Superintendent to join our Shipping Services team. In this role, you'll provide expert guidance and support across Health, Safety, Security, Environment, and Quality activities, helping to ensure compliance across our fleet while driving a positive safety culture. Working closely with operational teams, you'll play a key role in supporting our ambition of zero harm and zero spills through proactive engagement, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.

What you'll be doing:
  • Support HSSEQ activities across the Tankships fleet, helping to drive safe, compliant, and efficient operations.
  • Conduct internal ISM, ISPS, and TMSA audits across vessels, offices, and manning agency locations.
  • Participate in external audits and assessments, including TMSA reviews, DOC audits, and ISO audits.
  • Support vessel preparations for Flag State audits, annual inspections, and other regulatory assessments.
  • Assist the Ship Management Team with pre-vetting activities, ensuring vessels and crews are fully prepared for upcoming SIRE 2.0 inspections.
  • Promote Life Saving Rules and marine safety best practices through vessel visits, coaching, and engagement with onboard teams.
  • Monitor, analyse, and trend safety and quality performance data, identifying opportunities for improvement and driving corrective and preventative actions.
  • Track key environmental performance indicators and work closely with the Decarbonisation Manager to maintain compliance with international and national regulations.
  • Review emerging legislation, industry standards, and regulatory requirements, ensuring the fleet remains prepared for changes and maintains ongoing compliance.
  • Support the management and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS), including the review, development, and implementation of fleet procedures and manuals.
  • Facilitate and review risk assessments to ensure operational risks are effectively identified, managed, and mitigated.
  • Lead incident investigations as required, conducting root cause analysis and producing clear reports, findings, and recommendations.
  • Support emergency preparedness activities, including drills, response planning, and maintaining operational readiness as a member of the Emergency Response Team when required.
  • Work collaboratively with vessel crews and shoreside teams to foster a strong safety culture and support our commitment to zero harm and zero spills.
What we're looking for:
  • Senior Certificate of Competency, with previous experience serving in a senior rank onboard commercial vessels preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime regulations and management systems, including ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MLC, STCW, and ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 standards.
  • Good understanding of maritime HSSEQ requirements, industry frameworks, TMSA, and vessel vetting processes.
  • Proven ability to analyse data, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to deliver training and engage effectively with diverse audiences across different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Experience conducting audits, with relevant auditing training or certification preferred.
  • Incident investigation experience, including root cause analysis and the development of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with both onboard crews and shore-based teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, with experience using AMOS considered advantageous.
  • Additional training in areas such as Incident Investigation and Media Training would be beneficial.
Why join us?
  • Competitive benefits tailored to the division
  • Opportunities for career growth and visibility across the organisation
